San Acacia Trip 2-16-02

San Acacia Trip - On February 16, 2002, twenty one TCAS members and guests drove to the sleepy little village of San Acacia just off I-25 twelve miles south of Bernardo.   On the east side of the village is Cerro Indio, the mesa on which the Cerro Indio Pueblo was built.  The trip was led by Bob Webber.  We parked in front of the local cemetery and hiked the zig-zag trail up the mesa.  The pueblo had been built out of basalt rocks and there were piles of rocks and depressions across the area.  The pueblo may have had as many as 200 people living there at one time.  Around the edge of the mesa were wonderful petroglyphs.  Looking off to the east we could see the meandering Rio Grande and to the south the San Acacia diversion dam.  It was a lovely, sunny day as we sat on basalt rocks and ate our lunch.
