Pueblo Blanco  (Tabira)

(from Prehistoric NM Background....)

Tabira contains a large masonry pueblo and the remains of a Spanish mission.  Ceramic remains from the pueblo ruin indicate an occupation that began around A.D. 1200 and lasted until the 1670’s.  However, a major population increase occurred during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

The Spanish mission of Tabira was probably constructed around 1630.  This mission was excavated and reported by Stanley Stubbs (1959).  Depredations by Apaches and a severe drought probably caused the abandonment of Tabira in 1672.

Pueblo Colorado

(from Prehistoric NM Background)

This is a large masonry pueblo containing up to 800-1,000 rooms in twenty-one roomblocks and four or more kivas.  Ceramics from Pueblo Colorado indicate the pueblo may have been first settled as early as A.D. 1200, although the major occupation and building activities took place between A.D. 1325 and 1625.  Unlike other pueblos in the immediate vicinity, Pueblo Colorado saw a decline in population and eventual abandonment, during a period when other villages were increasing in size.  It is possible that Apache depredations may have been responsible for the early abandonment of Pueblo Colorado.  This site is nominated to the National Register.
