Mystery Rock (Los Lunas Decalogue Stone)

After two years of trying, on Oct. 20th, our group finally made it to Mystery Rock.  Many thanks to Doug Jones. 

The inscription on the rock appears to be in archaic Semitic alphabet.  According to Doug Jones of the Epigraphic Society of New Mexico, the inscription is a version of the Decalogue, the Bible’s Ten Commandments, and dates to approx. 1000 BC. 

The inscriptions have been known by local residents and Indians since the 1860's.  it is theorized that people of Phoenician decent arrived in North America by boat around 1000 BC and traveled through New Mexico.  Similar, but less extensive, inscriptions have been found in several places around the state.
