January 2, 2006


Estancia Upper Elementary School




The meeting was called to order by Bill Simms, President.


The minutes of November were read and approved. Bonnie gave the following report regarding the December 5, 2005 meeting. This was our annual Christmas Pot-luck and not a regular meeting. However a couple business items were handled. A vote was taken to approve the slate of officers for 2006. They are Bill Simms, President; Gloria Pohl, Vice President; Billye Head, Treasurer; Bonnie Long, Secretary. A Program Committee was approved consisting of Leslie Chavez, Linda Benz, and Judith Tamm. Bill stated he would contact site watch volunteers to set up a schedule for visitation. A refreshment list for next year was sent around. Billye collected dues for next year.


Treasurer’s Report: Billye stated she made a donation of $50 to Ghost Ranch and received a nice thank you from them.

Library Report: Marion stated that Linda Benz has donated several books (9) to the library. She will get caught up soon and catalog these books.


Program Committee: Linda Benz stated the committee needs a list of previous speakers to help in finding speakers. Bonnie will get a list to them. She stated we have the following speakers lined up:


February: Phil Young from the site watch program.


March: "?" Chapman talk on pottery


April: Glenna Dean?


Old Business: Bill reminded people that dues are due. They are $10 for individual and $15 for family. He also stated the newsletter is not ready as Idell and John have been gone out of state for a while.


New Business:


Spring Trips:


Rock Art Pecos Trip: John Hayden stated that April is not a good month for Glenna Dean to participate in the Pecos trip. The dates were changed to correspond with spring break which is March 27-31. John will see if these dates are okay with Glenna. 12 individuals were interested in going on this trip. Hopefully Glenna can give a preview talk regarding this area, maybe mid-March.




Other trips: Linda and Curtis will see about getting a docent to take us through the Socorro Museum either in mid-January or February. They will let Bill know when a good date is.


Another possibility is the old ghost town of Hagen in February. John Hayden will see if he can arrange this, maybe in February.


Site Watch: Bill has sent out an e-mail to the site watchers on upcoming things and a schedule for visitation. Most site watchers not present.

Speaker for the Evening: John Hayden gave an interesting and informative talk and slide presentation on the "Human Presence in the Sandia Mountains". Although he has given this talk before, many present had not heard him.

The meeting was called to order by Bill Simms, President.


The minutes for December and January were read and approved.


Treasurer’s Report: Billye stated we received $75 in dues in January. There are still a few people who haven’t paid their annual dues. She paid out $33.00 in expenditures to the Albuquerque Archaeological Society and the Archaeological Soc of NM. She stated that Curtis paid the curator at the Socorro Museum $50.00 out of his own pocket and she thinks he should be reimbursed. A motion was made, seconded and approved to reimburse Curtis Benz.

Library Report: Marion stated the library is open and encouraged people to visit.


Program Committee: Linda stated that Dick Chapman will give a talk on pottery in March, Tom Winds will speak in April and Jerry Brodie will give a talk at our May meeting at the Short Stop Restaurant.


Old Business:


Socorro trip: Linda Benz summarized the field trip to Socorro this past Saturday which included the Hamal Museum, and the Garcia Opera House which was built in 1884. There were 27 people who participated. It was very interesting, particularly the brewery museum.


SW Pecos Trip: John Hayden stated this trip is set for March 26-30. The tentative plan is to drive down on Sunday 3/26 as Glenna Dean cannot leave earlier. However, if people want to go down on Saturday, that is okay. There are plenty of motels in Del Rio and a campground at Lake Aristad. He is working on getting a rock art specialist to go out with us on Tuesday or Wednesday. There are plenty of things to do and see around the area on Monday. He is trying to get permission to visit some of the sites which can only be reached by boat. He will have more details next month. Bill asked if it was possible to get Glenna Dean to come talk to us sometime in March before the trip. Possibly a Monday night? John will check into this.


New Business:


Site Watch Update: Bill ask if anyone wanted to sign up? Phil Young stated there will be more training for site watch volunteers. There is a training at the Museum of Indian Arts in Santa Fe on Feb 25th, and another in Albuquerque on April 1st. He stated more site monitors are needed.


Other Spring Trips: John is working on getting permission to visit the Hagan Ghost town sometime later this month. Tentatively it will be Saturday, Feb 18th. He will let Bill know via e-mail.


Linda Benz suggested a trip to the Trinity Site in April. There are 2 openings a year and one is usually in April. Other possibilities are a return to the Salt Lakes here in Torrence County and to Claunch and Corona. There will be more discussion in March on possibilities.

Speaker for the Evening: Phillip Young, retired Archaeologist with the USFS gave an interesting talk on protecting our cultural resources and his involvement in past cases requiring enforcement of the Cultural Resource Protection Laws. He currently is the Sitewatch Coordinator for the NM State Historic Preservation Division.

The meeting was called to order by Bill Simms, President.


The minutes for February were read and approved as corrected.


Treasurer’s report :  February Balance, $1500.48

         March 6 Balance,  $1540.48


Library report:  Marion Shaw volunteered to buy books for the TCAS library cart while the Natl. Park Service is having their 20% off sale.  A motion was made and seconded to allocate $100 for the purchase of library books. 


New Business:


Suggested new field trips include: 

1.A historial trip in the Estancia valley including visiting the Finley ranch to see restored automobiles,  museum at Claunch, museum at Corona and Indian? sites on the Fitzner ranch. 

2.Tour facility at American Research in Santa Fe on a Friday at 1:00pm for $20 a head (16 people max.) suggested by Nancy Woodworth.

New tiles for visiting speakers:  We are out of speaker tiles.  After discussion, Billye Head made a motion that Alma Wimsatt be asked to make new tiles with a new design.  Motion passed.  Barbara Simms volunteered to check with Alma on the design.  Nancy Woodworth noted that there is sensitivity on using Native American rock art images on commercial items like tiles.

Discussion followed for those planning to go on the Texas field trip March 26 – March 30.  A packet of hand outs was distributed to each family planning to go on the trip. 


Speaker for the Evening:  Dr. Dick Chapman from UNM talked about the Galisteo Basin.  He talked about the early exploration done by Nelson and ended with this past year’s field work done in and around Pueblo Blanco.

Announcements:

New Mexico’s 13th Annual Archaeology Fair to be held in Clayton, NM on Sept. 15 – 16 at Centennial Park


Program committee:  Our speaker for Oct. will be Doug Jones and the speaker for Nov.   

will be Dan Kelly.                                                           


Old Business:

Guest speaker tiles – examples shown with more to be completed for those members who ordered tiles for themselves


Hagan Ghost town trip is still in the works.


New Business:


Officers for 2007 – nominating committee will be designated at the next regular meeting.


Fall Trips – Some suggestions were a hike up Bosque Peak, a Ghost Ranch weekend and Sevilleta Nat’l Wildlife Refuge will be open to the public on Oct. 21st


Site Watch Update – one trip was made in April and then the forest was

closed due to fire danger.  Regular trips should be made throughout the year.  The application forms may be downloaded on the site watch web page if you are interesting in joining this endeavor.  Two new areas may be added to our list – Pueblo Bonito and a site on the Berlier ranch.

Speaker for the evening:  Ron Fields, an archeologist with PNM, gave a historic presentation on atlatls.  He also gave a demonstration of the atlatl in the parking lot before our meeting started. More adventurous TCAS members tried it out.

Estancia Upper Elementary School


The meeting was called to order by Bill Simms, President.


The minutes for September were read and approved.


Treasurer’s Report:  Billye stated there was no activity this past month.  The balance is still $1386.76.


Library Report:  Marion stated there was no report.  She still needs to do some back cataloging.


Old Business:


Field Trips:  Reservations for 16-18 people have been made for Ghost Ranch.  The trip is scheduled for Nov 2, 3, 4th.  A sign up sheet was sent around.


Sevilleta NWLR, Oct 21.  Curtis will probably lead it.


New Business


Election of Officers:  A motion was made and 2nd that the current officers continue for another year.  A discussion was held.  Bill stated he really would like a replacement.  The Program Chair is the most difficult job, of finding speakers.  Both Linda Benz and Linda McConkey want to be replaced.  He stated that if someone else would be president, he would be the program chair.  Sharon Hannah stated she would be willing to be president for one year only. A new motion was made and seconded with the following officers to be voted on next month:  Sharon, President; Gloria, Vice President; Bonnie, Secretary; Billye, Treasurer; Marion, Library Chair, and Bill, Program Chair.


Future field trips: Jerry Shaw suggested Leroy Nicks, Mountainair Ranger for a program.  He has an old map from Grand Quivera to Quairai that might be interesting. It was also suggested that Don Fitzner lead a field trip to Dawson (outside Cimarron).  It is a ghost town.  There is an old cemetery there and an underground coal mine.  There were 2 terrible accidents back in the 1910-1920’s that killed hundreds of people.  It is on private property and we would need permission.


Site Watch:  Bill stated that roads were bad this summer from all the rain so no visits.  Last one was in April.  Two more sites will be added in the future.  There will be a site watch training in Feb. at the Sandia Ranger Station. There will be more information as time gets closer.


Other:  Nancy stated the annual State meeting will be held in Albuquerque on April 20, 21 and 22 at the Holiday Inn near Jefferson.  Theme will be “Pottery Mounds”.  She will give more information as it gets closer.  She stated speakers have already been lined up and it should be very good. 


She also stated that Dave Phillips from the Maxwell Museum is giving a talk this next Tuesday eve at the Tijeras Ranger Station titled “Pottery Mound Revisited”.  He found field notes at the Hibbins home after he died about the pottery mound near Isleta Pueblo.

Library Report:  Jan Cool will assist Marion.  She stated they are trying to get books catalogued.  They’ve had some computer problems and are looking for a new laptop.


Old Business


Ghost Ranch:  Bill gave a report on the recent trip to Ghost Ranch. He stated they had a great time.  There were 20 people who participated.  Friday, John Hayden gave an overview of all the northern Indian cultures.  Saturday, the group visited Tsiping ruins.  On Sunday, they visited Abiquiu and Ojo Caliente with its acres of grid gardens.


Other trips:  The Hagen Ghost town trip will be put off until spring.  There was no report on the Sevillita field trip.


Election of Officers:  A vote was taken and passed to accept the new officers.  Sharon Hanna, President,  Gloria Pohl, Vice President, Bonnie Long, Secretary, Billye Head, Treasurer, Marion Shaw, Library Chair, Bill Simms, Program Chair.


December Meeting:  This is our Christmas Pot-luck.  There will be no program.  Bill will show slides of our past field trips.  John Hayden will also show his slides.


New Business


Sharon talked about a field trip in the spring (preferably early June).  She stated it will be more of a historical outing. It will involve a visit to the Philmont Boy Scout Ranch on Saturday, a visit to Kit Carson’s home, a walking tour of Cimarron.  We probably will visit the Dawson cemetery on Sunday.  We will stay at the Cimarron Inn.  Reservations will need to be made.  Sharon will let us know more information as the time gets closer.


Bill stated that a request has been made to have a repeat lecture and field trip to the Estancia Valley salt lakes by Roger Anderson.  Bill will try to set this up in the spring.

Speaker for the evening.  Dan Kelly gave a fascinating talk a bout the possible influence of the West African culture on the Mimbres culture.  He had excellent visuals demonstrating examples in the Mimbres pottery.
