New Business:

TCAS Museum Proposal: Marty Hibbs, Mayor of Estancia stated there is a state program called "Main Street" which provides some funding to towns to revitalize their downtown area and encourage new businesses. He’s not sure Estancia is big enough to qualify for the main funding, but he thinks there is a possibility of getting funding from separate programs. He would like the town of Estancia to buy 4-5 vacant buildings along Main Street in Estancia, renovate them and encourage new businesses. He thinks the Citizen’s Newspaper building would be a wonderful site for a museum. It will probably need about $250,000 to fix it up. He stated it needs a non-profit group to spearhead the project and go for grants etc, such as our group. Judith Tamm stated TCAS is a non-profit 501c3 organization so we would qualify for this if that is what TCAS would want. Bill stated that Tucumcari did a similar thing for their museum.

Mayor Hibbs stated the first step is for Estancia to purchase the building (which he thinks can be accomplished in the near future). The next step would be to find a group to pursue funding and perhaps began reconstruction next spring. A vote was taken and the majority present was in favor of being the group spearheading this project. Mayor Hibbs will keep us posted.

Site Stewardship: Rebecca Stoneman stated there are several sites at risk and some vandalism has occurred. She has received several applications from TCAS members who want to participate in this program. Unfortunately, she is moving to Utah in October and needs to set up the training soon as she doesn’t know who the new director will be. To accommodate our schedules and hers, the first part of the training (paperwork involved) will occur next Monday evening, Sept 19 at the Mountainair Ranger Station in Mountainair from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM. The field trip to the different sites will be the following Sunday, Sept 25th. We will meet in Willard at the cantina at 12 noon for lunch and start out at 1 PM. Bill will send out an e-mail to everyone with this information.

Field Trips: John Hayden has reserved a block of rooms at Ghost Ranch for the week-end of Nov 4, 5,6th. We will discuss this in more detail at the October meeting. He will work on a trip to the Pecos area in the spring. Glenna Dean has expressed an interest to participate as this is the area where she did much of her work.

Curtis suggests we do a field trip to Claunch near Gran Quivera, possibly the end of October and visit their museum. We will discuss this further at the Oct meeting.

The offer is contingent on the following: there needs to be an architect, and engineer to look at the building first to make sure the building can be renovated. The Board of Trustees felt a museum would be the best use of this building. He will keep us posted.

Curtis asked what we want in the museum. Morrow stated we would need a core of artifacts first to get started and that we would need to be selective on what we accepted. Bill stated there are several old families in the Estancia Valley who are interested in donating items for a museum. When a museum becomes feasible, he stated we will develop committees to look at what goes in the museum and how we will operate it.

Site Stewardship Program: Judith gave an overview of the training that took place for this program this past month. She stated there were about 12 people who took part in the training.
