January 5, 2004

Estancia Upper Elementary Library


President Bill Simms called the meeting to order.


Treasurer’s Report: Billye Head gave the annual report for 2003 and asked members to please pay their 2004 dues. Checkbook balance is $1,348.11.


Library Report: Linda Benz has donated several books. Marion will begin a library list and reorganize the cart.


January Speaker: Chuck Van Gelder spoke on “”Did The People of Tijeras Pueblo gamble with the People of San Antonio?” He also pointed out areas where NM Highway construction policies allowed roads to be built through old cemeteries, etc


New Business: Jerry Shaw will set up a field trip on January 31 to tour the Frank Hibben home in Albuquerque. Nancy Woodworth will set up a trip to the Indian Arts and Culture Museum in Santa Fe on February 21. Waynette Burnett has set up Sharon Niederman to speak on May 3.

The meeting was called to order by Bill Simms, President.


The minutes of January, 2004 were read and approved.


Treasurer’s Report:


Beginning Balance Jan 5,2004 $1348.11


Expenditures: $58.00


Income: (dues) $85.00


Ending Balance February 2, 2004 $1375.11


Library Report: Marion stated that she has gotten started on the list of books for the library. She also recommended that TCAS purchase the book "It Happened in New Mexico" by James Crutchfield. It is an excellent historical overview. Billye will purchase it.


Old Business: Morrow gave an overview of the field trip to Frank Hibben’s home 1/31.


New Business:


Nancy stated she still doesn’t have a speaker for the March meeting. Rebecca Stoneman will talk on site stewardship for Pueblo Blanco at the March meeting but this is not enough for a program. John Hayden gave several possibilities that he will research for March.


The April speaker will be Phil Wilson from Salinas and Sharon Niederman will talk in May.


Nancy has arranged for a field trip to the Santa Fe Museums on Saturday Feb 21. Those interested in going will meet at the Indian Arts & Culture Museum at 10:00 AM. A sign up sheet was sent around. Bill will put a reminder on e-mail before the trip.


The speaker for the evening was Dr. Jonathan Kaplan from UNM who talked about his field work at the Chocola ruin in Guatamala. His presentation demonstrated the process of excavating an ancient ruin in a small town and the involvement of the local people.

The meeting was called to order by Bill Simms, President.


Treasurer’s Report:

Library Report: Marion Shaw reported that Luther Rivera has given two books to our library collection. They are “The AS-8 Pueblo and the Canada de las Milpas” by Richard Bice, Phyllis S. Davis and Wm. Sundt and “Climbing The Rocks” Papers in Honor of Helen and Jay Crotty.


Old Business: Bill Simms reported on the field trip to Santa Fe and the museums. The group enjoyed a private tour of the Indian Arts and Culture Center plus a visit to the Wheelwright Museum, The Folk Art Museum and lunch at the cafe.


New Business: Various field trips were discussed. Some suggestions included:


• Black Water Draw Museum between Clovis and Portales.


• Fort Stanton - includes a petroglyph area


• Turquoise Museum on Central Ave. near Old Town


• Tom Bolack Museum in Farmington


• Zuni tour inconnection with the State Archeological Meeting in April


• Sharon Hanna has been in touch with Paula Martin about a tour of Ft. Burguin (six miles out of Toas). This would include the archeological site, Pot Creek. Sharon will try to set up a tour for June 26. Hold this date!


• Chaco Canyon in Sept. or Oct. 2004 with Joan Mathien and Tom Windes. John Hayden will coordinate this trip, and Tom Windes will come talk to us before the trip.


• Ranching Museum near Las Cruces


• AND, of course, GHOST RANCH!


The speaker for the evening was Dr. Bradley Vierra associated with Los Alamos Laboratories. He spoke on his current research on the origins of agriculture in northwest New Mexico.


Refreshments were provided by Gloria Phol, Sue Harvey and Marion Shaw.

The minutes from April, 2004 were read and approved.  There were no minutes from the May 3, 2004 meeting as this was held at the Short Stop Café and did not include a business meeting.  Sharon Niederman was the guest speaker.

Library Report:  Marion stated that all the books have now been entered into the computer.  Linda Benz has donated several books to the library.  Marion has purchased the book “Off the Beaten Path”.  Billye will reimburse her the $9.00 for the book.  Marion encouraged everyone to check out our library.


New Business: September and October Field trips:


Bill Baxter will lead a trip to the old Spanish gold mine in the Ortiz Mountains on Saturday, Sept 25th.  A sign-up sheet was sent around.


Bosque Peak hike?  Possibly do the end of Sept or first part of October. Bill will set a date and send out an e-mail to people.


Fort Stanton:  This will be put off until next year.


Chaco Canyon:  A sign up sheet was sent around for this trip for the week-end of October 8,9 and 10.  Joan Mathien who will be our guide for this trip will be our speaker at the October 4th meeting.


John Hayden will discuss a trip to the Pajarito Plateau at the Oct meeting.

Speaker for the evening:  Steve Mack of the SW Archeological Associates gave an interesting talk on the prehistoric peoples of the Park Plateau near Raton.  Pottery shards and bone beads found on the site  suggest both the plains Indians and the pueblo Indians.

Billye stated that the recent American Archeology magazine had an article about Dr. Kaplan and his work in Guatemala.  He was our guest speaker back in March.


There is no library report.  Marion not here.


Old Business:


Bill passed around pictures of both the Bosque Peak hike done on Saturday, Sept 18 and the old Spanish gold mine trip with Bill Baxter on Saturday, Sept 25. 


New Business:


Chaco Trip:  Most of the meeting was spent working out the logistics of the Chaco trip scheduled the week-end of Oct. 8, 9, and 10th.  A pot-luck will be held Friday evening.  Joan Mathien will meet our group in the morning for a tour of the major ruins including those in the back country. A sign-up sheet was sent around for the pot-luck dinner.


Pajarito Plateau:  Dr. Bradley Vierra , archaeologist at Los Alamos LANL will be our leader and has said that the area to be visited is in a secure area.  We will need someone who works there to get us in.  A possible date is Thurs, Nov 4th.  A sign up sheet was sent around.


Cunningham Hill Mine:  Bill will pursue a date, either end of Oct or in Nov and send out an e-mail to everyone.  A sign-up sheet was sent around.

Speaker for the evening:  Joan Mathien, Archaeologist with National Park Service.  She gave an overview of the Chacoan culture and the years of research done to try and figure out who they were and what happened to them.

The minutes from October 4, 2004 were read and approved.

No Library report, but  everyone was encouraged to look at our extensive library and check out a book.


Old Business:


Thanks to John Hayden and Joan Mathien for the successful Chaco Canyon trip.  John did a slide show on the computer for us this evening.


The trip to Los Alamos with Dr. Bradley Vierra will be Nov. 4.  We will meet at the Conoco station in White Rock at 10:00am. 


The Cunningham Mine tour has been re-scheduled for Friday, Nov. 19.  Meet at the LAC gate on County Road 55 at 10:00am. 


New Business:

2005 Election of Officers:

The motion was made by Morrow Hall and seconded that the current slate of officers be reelected for the year 2005.  Motion passed.


Officers for the year 2005 are: President: Bill Simms, Vice President: Gloria Pohl, Secretary: Bonnie Long, Treasurer: Billye Head, Past President/Board of Directors: Linda Benz, Director at Large: Linda McConkey, Program Chairman: Nancy Woodworth.


John Hayden will check on a possible field trip to the Trinity College Museum for December.


Nancy Woodworth announced a 7:00pm meeting on Nov. 9 at Tijeras to hear G. B. Cornucopia speak on Chaco astronomy.


On December 6 TCAS will have a Christmas potluck and annual slideshow.

Speaker for the evening:  Bill Baxter gave an excellent talk on early mining in the Los Cerrillos area. He discussed turquoise, lead and silver mining as it relates to the area.
