January 6, 2003

Estancia High School Library




The meeting was called to order by Vice President Gloria Pohl.


The minutes of the December, 2002 meeting were read and approved.


Treasurer’s Report: There were two reports. The December report showed an ending balance of $1306.74. There were no expenditures. The Annual Report for 2002 showed a beginning balance of $1223.74 and an ending balance of $1306.74.


Library Report: Marion stated that a group of individuals are going to Page 1 Too on January 25th to buy books. She would like to buy something for TCAS. Morrow Hall made a motion for a $50 budget to purchase books for TCAS. This was seconded and approved.


Program Report: Nancy stated Dodie Fugate will give a talk on dogs in ancestral pueblos in February. She doesn’t have any speakers lined up yet for March, April or May.


She stated that the Friends of Tijeras Pueblo is starting a monthly lecture series beginning next Monday night. (See attached list). The first meeting will be presented by John Hayden and Karen Takai on how the interpretive program got started 10 years ago.


Old Business:


The January 2002 newsletter will be out by the February meeting. Bill has requested volunteers to write brief summaries of speaker topics and field trips in 2002 for the newsletter and email to him. He needs write ups on the following:

April 02- Helen Crotty rock art (brief paragraph in April’s minutes).


May 02- Jerry Brody-pottery (no volunteers).


Sept 02- Phyllis Davis & Dick Bice prehistoric mine at Cerrillos Hills (Nancy will do).


Oct 02- Dara Saville, rock art kachinas (no volunteers)


Field Trips:


April 02- Historical sites trip (no volunteers)


May 02- Pueblo Blanco & Pueblo Colorado (no volunteers)


May 02- Tecolote Pueblo Excavation trip (Linda McConkey will do).


Sept 02- Rea Homestead hike, Bosque Peak (already done, on Web site)


Nov 02- Ghost Ranch trip (already done, on Web site)


Since most people can’t remember what happened several months ago enough to write up a brief summary, Morrow Hall volunteered to take notes and write a brief summary on speakers at each meeting from now on. He took notes this evening on Glenna Dean’s talk.


New Business:


Nancy stated that John Hayden has already received the ASNM Achievement Award in the past. Another nomination was made for this award. This was seconded and approved. Marion Shaw and John Hayden were chosen to fill out the form regarding the background and achievements of this individual. Nancy needs this back by Feb 1st.


2003 Refreshments list: See attached list for the entire year. For February it will be Linda McConkey, Catherine Purley and Donna Jernigan.


January/February field trips: It was decided to try and schedule the museum trips in February. Luther stated that the Maxwell Museum is not available on week-ends and is open from 9-4 PM Monday-Friday. He stated Karen Cline recommended limiting groups to 15 people. She would be willing to do separate trips, one for school teachers on a teacher holiday and another day for other folks. Luther will give Bill Simms her phone number. Possibly could do on President’s day February 17th if they are open? Luther will check.


Nancy will contact Chris at the Indian Art Museum in Santa Fe to check on dates and times. Hopefully she can set up a trip on a week-end in February. There were no recommendations for any outdoor trips.


Nancy asked for names for future speakers. Roger Anderson was suggested to see if he could do a combination speaker/field trip regarding the outlines of historic Estancia Lake. Eric Blinman was listed as another possible speaker. It has been a few years since he spoke to the group on pottery and we have several new members. Nancy will follow up on these possibilities.


Web Site: Don Giles stated he needs pictures of outings and trips before 1999 to add to the web site. Marion has many pictures. She will give these to Bill Simms so he can scan them to be put on the computer. Don then demonstrated how to access the web site to the group on 4 computers. TCAS will make a $25.00 donation to the Laboratory of Anthropology in lieu of a fee to Doty Fugate.


Library Report: A total of $75.82 was spent on new books this past month. They are:


New Mexican Pottery, Petroglyph Calendar, Chaco Journey, Arrowheads and Stone Artifacts, Pueblo Indian Painting, The meaning of the New Mexico Mystery Stone


A motion was made to approve the expenditures for the above books. Motion seconded and passed.


Old Business:


Website: Bill asked for feedback, information and pictures, and ideas for improvements and/or changes.


Fieldtrip to Maxwell Museum: We will leave the library parking lot at 8:45 AM. Tour to begin at 10:00 AM. A Sigh-up sheet was passed around. We will visit the archival collections section.


Newsletter: Bill asked if we wanted to continue the newsletter. Most every one said "yes". Option is to either print out one or put it on the website. The consensus was we need both. Bill stated we also need better notes taken of speakers at meetings and field trips. We need to assign someone to take notes at time of sign up for trip. Judith Tamm will take notes on the Maxwell Museum trip.




New Business:


State of NM Archeological meeting: This is scheduled for May 2,3,4,2003 in Taos, NM. Registration forms are available.


Lecture series: There are three available. Handouts with details also available.

March Speaker: Tom O’Laughlin


March Field Trip: Saturday March 1, to Waldo Mine. This will involve a mine tour led by NM Tech. A sign-up sheet was passed around.


April Speaker and Trip: Dr. Roger Anderson will speak on the geologic and geomorphic history of Lake Estancia at our April 7th meeting. He will also lead a field trip on Saturday April 26th.


May Field Trip: A trip to El Moro, Malpais, Ice Caves, Zuni Pueblo, and Grants Mining Museum is tentatively planned for Saturday, May 10th.

Library Report: Marion stated two books; La Jornado and Fort Stanton have been donated to the library by Sharon Hanna.


Program Report: Nancy stated that the speaker she had arranged for May has cancelled. She is going out of the country later this week, and won’t be back until after the April meeting. She asked for suggestions for a speaker. Several names were given to her. She will contact Luther before she leaves and have him arrange a speaker. Linda McConkey will see if the Short Stop restaurant will be available for dinner as we did last year.


Old Business:


Maxwell Museum trip: Judith Tamm took notes and gave a report. She stated that Catherine Kline gave a tour through the basement where a vast collection of pots, baskets, and fabric and kachina dolls were stored. Bill passed around pictures of the visit. It was a very successful and interesting trip. Luther had arranged the trip.


TCAS Website: Bill stated he would like feedback on what people think about the website. Any suggestions for additions and/or improvement please e-mail him or Don. He will put this month’s newsletter on the website as well as past minutes, and field trips. Bill stated he has been receiving e-mail from other groups as the website is available to other viewers. Marion asked if it were possible to get a counter so we know how many "hits" we’ve had. Bill will pursue this with Don. He stated the next newsletter will come out after the May field trips.


New Business:


Upcoming lecture series for March:


Friend’s of Tijeras Pueblo: March 11th, Richard Melzer "The CCC in New Mexico". Nancy stated that in July, there will be a special lecture by Dr. Mark Lycett who has been doing work on the Paako pueblo. She’ll let us know more details later.


Santa Fe: March 10th, Dr. John Ware:"Why is a Kiva"


Albuquerque: March 17th, Dr. J Brodie, "Southwest Pueblo Pottery"


Upcoming field trips:


March: Waynette Burnett and Jerry Shaw will try to get permission to visit the Chupadera Pueblo. A tentative date for Saturday, March 15th was set and a sign up sheet was passed around. This is to replace the Waldo Mine trip that was cancelled.


April: Lake Estancia, led by Dr. Roger Anderson on Saturday, April 26th. A sign up sheet was passed around. Dr. Anderson will be the speaker at the April meeting.


May: Two trips planned. El Moro, "Inscription Rock", Saturday May 10th. Cement Springs, led by Rebecca Stoneman, on Tuesday, May 20th. May is National Historic Preservation Month so this will correspond nicely with that. Sign up sheets were sent around for both of these trips.


Other possible field trips were mentioned. Regge will explore doing a stone enclosure trip near Las Vegas in early June. Another idea was the museum in Deming, combining it with a trip to Silver City and the Gila cliff dwellings. The town of Corona is having a historical walking tour of Corona on May 24th.

Speaker for the evening was Tom O’Laughlin from the Museum of Albuquerque. He gave a very interesting talk on the Plaza Montoya Pueblo which had been recently discovered just south of Socorro.

Library Report: Marion stated that there is nothing new. It was mentioned that the membership would like to know what is available. She stated that the computer is still not working, but if it doesn’t get fixed soon, she could put a list together.


Old Business:


Oney Ranch Field Trip: Bill stated it was a very interesting trip and involved several stops including a visit to Jerry Shaw’s parent’s homestead. He passed around pictures taken at the different stops.


TCAS Website: Some members haven’t tried to access it and others have had trouble accessing it possibly due to the complicated address. Dr. Roger Anderson gave TCAS some articles that Bill will scan and Don will add to the website. The current newsletter is on the website. The last newsletter for this year will be out on May 20th.


New Business:


Upcoming events and field trips:


April 26, Saturday: Dr. Roger Anderson will lead this trip to explore the shoreline boundaries of the ancient Lake Estancia in the Estancia Valley. It will begin at 8:00 at the library.


May 2,3,4, Fri, Sat, Sun: State Archeological Meeting in Taos.


May 5, Monday: The last meeting of the year will be held at the Short Stop Restaurant and will start at 6:30 PM. Dinner will be Mexican food at $6.50/person. Steve Post will talk about the excavation at the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe.


May 10, Saturday: All day trip to El Moro. Meet at the library at 8:00 AM.


May 20, Tuesday: Rebecca Stoneman will lead a trip to Cement Springs. Meet at the US Forest District Office in Mountainair at 9:15 AM (leave Estancia at 8:30 AM).


May 24, Saturday: Historical walking tour of Corona will start at 9:30 AM.


June 7, Saturday: Regge Wiseman will lead a trip to Villanueva State Park to view several stone enclosures.

Speaker for the evening was Dr. Roger Anderson from the Earth and Planetary Sciences at UNM. He gave a fascinating talk and slide show on the ancient Lake Estancia which completely disappeared 12,000 years ago.

There was no formal business meeting. Bill made an announcement reminding everyone about the upcoming field trips in May and June.


Nancy gave a report on the State Archaeological meeting this past week-end in Taos. She stated that she gave TCAS a glowing report at the state meeting. She also stated we received the book "Climbing the Rocks" as a gift from the ASNM honoring Helen Croddy. Nancy presented The Archaeological Achievement Award from the


ASNM to Waynette Burnett, a principal founder of TCAS.


Speaker for the evening was Stephen Post, Supervisory Archaeologist for the NM Museum in Santa Fe. He gave a fascinating and entertaining talk on the recent excavation at the Palace of the Governors.

The meeting was called to order by Bill Simms, President.


The brief minutes from the May meeting at the Short-Stop Restaurant were read and approved.

Library Report: Bill stated the TCAS library is now located here at the Estancia Middle School Library. He also stated that Paula Crane donated two books on the history of Corona to the library. Waynette also provided two books donated by the National Park Service regarding the history of the Bandelier Monument and the Pecos Monument for our library.


Bill stated Marion wasn’t here because she was attending the funeral of Oscar Jones, a former TCAS member. A motion was made, seconded and approved to donate the same amount of money from TCAS as was donated for Vivian Counts last fall to his favorite charity, the "Children’s Home of Taos". Bonnie will notify Billye Head.


Old Business:


TCAS Web Site: Bill asked for suggestions and/or improvements. One problem appears to be the complicated address which makes it difficult to use easily or remember. There is nothing that can be done at this time to make it more user friendly. Don Giles repeated the address for the web site. Bill reminded everyone to please try and use it as everything is on it.




New Business:


Upcoming trips/events:


Cement Springs: Rebecca Stoneman is coordinating a week-long survey of the Cement Springs area the week of Sept. 8-12. She is hoping members of TCAS will participate. She will do an evening presentation on Wed. Sept 10, barring bad weather. A sign-up sheet was sent around for the Wed. eve presentation. Since most members would be unable to attend, it was suggested that possibly she could do a presentation here at TCAS sometime this winter. Nancy will check in to this.


Casa San Isidro in Corrales: Judith Tamm stated they have tours Tuesday-Sunday beginning at 10:00 AM. Price is $4.00 adults, $3.00 seniors. A sign up sheet was sent around for Saturday, October 11. Judith will make arrangements for the tour.


Ghost Ranch: Dates for the annual trip to Ghost Ranch have been set for Friday, October 31-Sunday, November 2. The cost for the week-end is $110.00/person. This includes lodging, supper on Fri, and meals on Saturday and Sunday breakfast. John Hayden will be our leader. He stated there are several major pueblos in the middle Chama area. Since many people haven’t been there before, some of the more special places may be revisited. A sign-up sheet was sent around.


Other possible outings/speakers: John stated that he has found several pueblo sites close to Torrance County but most are on private land. He will see what he can arrange before the end of the year. Francis Winn suggested a visit to the old Spanish living history museum SW of Santa Fe, called Las Golondrinas. Nancy stated that a good winter trip might be the old Turquoise store near Old Town in Albuquerque. They give tours. Also, Cerillos historical park. Bill Baxter could arrange a tour of the old turquoise mine. These ideas will be discussed more next month.




Other announcements: Bill stated there is no newsletter yet. He is waiting on some notes regarding speakers from last spring.

Speaker for the evening was Marian Rodee, retired curator at the Maxwell Museum. She gave a fascinating talk and slide show on the history of the Navaho weavers and their famous rugs.

Estancia Upper Elementary School Library


The meeting was called to order by Bill Simms, President.


The minutes were read and approved with one minor correction. The school library we are meeting in is the Estancia Upper Elementary School, not the Estancia Middle School.


Treasurer’s Report: There was no report. Billye not present.


Library Report: Marion not present. Bill stated that Marion has got our library organized here.


Old Business: Morrow stated he will get minutes from last year’s speakers to Bill soon so Bill can print a newsletter.


New Business:


Nim Scott, a former TCAS member died last week. TCAS did a profile on him in 2000 and the East Mountain Telegraph also did one this year when he turned 89. Copies of these articles are available to anyone interested. A suggestion was made to make a similar donation from TCAS as done for Oscar Jones to his favorite charity. Bill will contact Billye to let her know and to have her call his daughter for which charity to make this donation to.


Casa Isidro field trip: This is scheduled for Saturday, October 11th. Judith gave directions and information regarding the visit.


Ghost Ranch: There currently are 26 individuals signed up. John stated there are 10 rooms reserved and some rooms have several beds so there should be enough space for everyone. There may be more rooms available when we get there. Bill will e-mail information to everyone.


Other trips: John is still trying to work out something regarding field trips to see the kilns in the Sandias. Bill is hoping to have a field trip to Bosque Peak, but probably won’t be until November as October is pretty full.


Speaker for the evening was John Hayden who gave a talk on "the Edge of the Pueblo World", some aspects of the Gallina and Tewa pueblos near Ghost Ranch.

Library Report: Marion stated that Linda Benz donated 3 books to the library. They are:

"Lee’s Ferry, a desert river crossing", by Rusho and Crampton.


Old Business:


Casa Isidro trip: Judith Tamm gave an overview of the tour at Casa Isidro in Corrales.


Ghost Ranch: Bill stated this was one of the best trips yet to Ghost Ranch. He passed around pictures from the trip. John Hayden gave an overview of the sites visited which included the Tsiping ruins, the Nogal cliff house in Spring Canyon and Gallina unit and pit houses on top of a ridge recently burned by a forest fire.




New Business:


Election of Officers: All those in current positions agreed to continue on for another year. There were no other nominations. A motion was made, and passed to re-elect the current officers for another year.


Upcoming trips: John Hayden will lead a trip to several kiln areas in the Sandias on Saturday, November 15. Those interested in attending will meet John at the Sandia Ranger Station in Tijeras at 9:30 AM. Bill will send out an e-mail before the trip.


Other Trips/Ideas: Nancy stated we need a speaker for January. If anyone has any ideas please get with her. She will try to arrange a field trip this winter to the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe. She will check into a possible tour of the Frank Hibben home.


Judith brought up the idea of a T-shirt and/or a hat for TCAS members with our logo on it. There was some discussion on developing a logo appropriate for a T-shirt. Bill suggested people bring ideas for a design and colors to the December meeting.


The December meeting will be a Christmas pot-luck with no formal speaker.


The speaker for the evening was Bradley Bowman, Curator of the Museum of Archaeology and Material Culture in Cedar Crest. He gave an overview of the controversy surrounding the Sandia Cave excavations in 1936 and 1940 and the subsequent federal research grant to take a new look at these excavations and make an exhibit of the cave findings.
