January 7, 2002

The meeting was called to order by President Bill Simms.


The minutes of the December meeting were read and approved.


Marcia Fitzner gave the end-of-the year report for the office of Treasurer. Balance at the beginning of the year 2001 was $395.71, income for the year was $1,709.47, expenses were $881.44, leaving an end-of-year balance of $1,223.74.


Marion Shaw reported that three books have been donated to the Library.


Old business:


A sign-up sheet for the field trip to Dan Adams’ ranch near Corona was completed. Thirty-one people signed up.


White Ranch Project: John Hayden will resubmit his proposal for a grant.


Bill Simms distributed copies of the new membership directory.


Jerry Shaw has obtained permission for TCAS to visit historic sites in Torrance County. This trip will be tentatively scheduled for sometime in March.


New business:


The February speaker will be Bob Hart from the Farmers & Ranchers Museum in Las Cruces. His subject will be German POWs in the Las Cruces area.


Roy McConkey suggested TCAS have a field trip led by Regge Wiseman sometime in the summer or fall.


Don Fitzner suggested a trip to Berlier’s sometime this year.


Bill Simms proposed the development of a Newsletter Committee. Volunteers were Waynette Burnett, John Hayden, and Linda McConkey. The next newsletter is due April 1.

The meeting was called to order by President Bill Simms.


The minutes of the January meeting were read and approved.


Billye Head gave the Treasurer’s report. After depositing $65.00 collected as dues, the balance is $1,288.74. John Hayden moved and Roy McConkey seconded that the Treasurer annually pay for the subscription to the Archaeology Conservancy magazine and dues to the State Association and the Albuquerque Society.


Marion Shaw had no Library business to report. Luther Rivera announced that he has some books that he will donate to TCAS. Linda McConkey recommended the purchase of "Hitler’s Last Soldier In America" if it can be found.


Old business:


Since the January 21st trip to the Adams ranch was cancelled, four new dates were offered to Dan Adams—two on Saturdays and two on Mondays. Dr. Adams can choose one Saturday and one Monday. Members signed up for the trips.


Sign-up sheets for a trip to San Acacia on February 16 and a trip to historic sites in Torrance County on March 16 were passed around.


White Ranch Project: John Hayden has resubmitted his proposal for a grant. It may be summer before we get a response.


New business:


Regge Wiseman has scheduled a trip for TCAS to visit New Mexico Highlands’ field school excavation at Tecolote, near Las Vegas. The trip will be on May 25, a Saturday.


The March speaker will be Rebecca Stohman, archaeologist for the Mountainair District of the Forest Service. Her topic will be rock art.


In April Helen Crotty will talk about kiva murals.


John Hayden told TCAS about a contest to rename the AWANYU newsletter of the State Association. The winner will be given a free membership to the state association. The next state meeting will be in Farmington on May 5. John also gave a brief overview of other state activities, which can be read about in the AWANYU.

Marion Shaw was absent, so there was no Library report.


Old business:


The possibility of working at Dan Adams’ ranch was discussed. The idea was tabled until the group can talk with Dan in person and a proposal can be drawn up. Since the project was to be completed by June, this probably will not be possible.


The field trip to Torrance County historical sites was rescheduled until April 20 to accommodate trip organizer Jerry Shaw, who is recovering from back surgery.


The May 25 field trip to a site at Tecolote, near Las Vegas, is still on schedule, per Regge Wiseman.


New business:


We need to get to work on the newsletter.


John Hayden read a list of speakers and field trips scheduled for the state archaeology meeting and Historical Preservation Week. There will be a field trip to the Mountainair Ranger Station on May 16 at 9:00 a.m.

Speaker for the evening was Rebecca Stohman, archaeologist for Mountainair and Sandia Ranger Stations. Her topic was rock art iconography. A large part of the discussion was about "flaming crowns", named by Don Diego de Luxan, bird masks, and cloud faces.

The meeting was called to order by President Bill Simms.


The minutes of the March meeting were read and approved.


There was no Treasurer’s report. Marion Shaw reported that a new issue of AMERICAN ARCHAEOLOGY magazine is now available in our library.


Old Business:


Linda McConkey has talked with The Shortstop about plans for the May 13 supper meeting. We will need to guarantee 25 members and guests for supper. The meal will either be a Mexican buffet or a grilled selection from the menu. A speaker is needed for this meeting. Nancy Woodworth will ask Dr. and Mrs. Jerry Brody to be our speakers. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m.


The field trip to Torrance County historical sites is rescheduled for April 15 at 9:00 a.m. This trip will be led by Jerry Shaw. Those interested will meet five miles north of Mountainair at the junction of Hwy 55 and Hwy 542. Those wanting to car pool will meet at 8:30 a.m. in front of the Estancia High School Library.


A letter was received confirming the field trip on May 25 with Regge Wiseman.


Those wishing to attend the May 16 field trip led by Rebecca Stoneman need to be at the Mountainair Ranger Station at 9:00 a.m. Call the ranger station at 847-2990 to


make reservations for this trip.




New Business:


Information on the Passports in Time 2002 summer program here in New Mexico was passed on to interested TCAS members. This program is under the USDA Forest Service. There are two sessions in NM: Cibola NF Sept. 9-13 and Lincoln NF Sept. 15-20


The next newsletter is due the end of September. It would be helpful if a particular person would take notes on each field trip.


Our September meeting will be on Tuesday the 3rd o f September instead of the usual first Monday.


It was agreed to ask John Hayden if a fall Ghost Ranch trip is possible this year.


Nancy Woodworth talked about a possible field trip in early summer to visit the Anasazi Heritage Museum in Dolores, Colorado. This is a trip she has made recently and there was expressed interest in this trip.

Speaker for the evening was Helen Crotty, a member of the Albuquerque Archeological Society. She and her husband, Jay, are currently working at Petroglyph National Monument as well as cataloging petrogylphs at Commance Gap. Her topic was on kiva murals found along the Rio Grande. Most of these murals have been destroyed, but she gave an excellent slide show with examples and drawings of the various areas she used in her doctoral thesis.

The meeting was called to order by President Bill Simms.


The minutes of the April meeting were read and approved.


Billye Head gave the Treasurer’s report. Current balance is $1,245.74.


Sharon Hanna gave the Library report for Marion Shaw. Luther Rivera has donated three books to the Library, and Nancy Woodworth donated a memorial volume from the State Meeting.


Old business:


Bill Simms reported on the Torrance County historical sites field trip, and circulated photos.


John Hayden reported on the state meeting, and Regge Wiseman reported on the field trips associated with the state meeting.


The field trip to Tecolote Pueblo and stone enclosures with Regge Wiseman is scheduled for May 25th. Meet at 10:00 a.m. north of the junction ofI-25 and Hwy. #285 at the old highway, or at I-25 Tecolote exit. Leave Estancia at 8:30 a.m.


Rebecca Stoneman will try to have a rock art field trip in June. (This was later cancelled due to the fire danger and forest closures.) A field trip to Pueblos Blanco and Colorado is scheduled for May 16.


New business:


John Hayden will follow-up on the possibility of a field trip to Ghost Ranch this fall.


Rebecca Stoneman talked about her PIT project at Cement Springs in the Gallinas Mountains. Chief Manuelito was killed there. Her group will be looking for indications of a cavalry encampment and a stage stop.

The meeting was called to order by President Bill Simms.


The minutes of the May meeting were read and approved.


There were no Treasurer or Librarian’s reports. Bill Simms showed the copy of Teresa E. Cabebe’s master’s thesis, "Site Aggregation and the Archaeological Record of Tecolote Pueblo (LA 296)", which was donated to TCAS by Bill Mishler for our library.


Old business:


Bill Simms reported on the Tecolote trip.


Bob Jernigan reported on the May 16th trip to Pueblos Colorado and Blanco.


Rebecca Stoneman wants TCAS to visit her PIT project at Cement Springs on September 11th or 13th. Sign-up sheets were circulated for both days, and Bill will e-mail the details after talking to Rebecca.


The Ghost Ranch Trip was tentatively scheduled for November 1, 2, and 3. John Hayden will confirm this with Ghost Ranch.


New business:


Nancy Woodworth gave a review of speakers for upcoming months.


Future field trips:


There may be a rock art field trip in early October. This will be discussed at the October meeting.


A trip to the Rea homestead/Bosque Peak is scheduled for September 28.


Luther Rivera will be presenting "Ancient Art of Flint Knapping" at Tijeras Pueblo on September 21st from 9-3.


Linda McConkey can order copies of the book In Plain Site for anyone interested.


The State Archaeological Fair will be held in Silver City on October 4 and 5.

The meeting was called to order by President Bill Simms.


The minutes of the September meeting were read and approved.


Treasurer’s report: $1,251.74. Library report: Gloria Farley’s book, IN PLAIN SIGHT, has been donated to TCAS by Linda McConkey.


Old business:


Bill Simms reported on the hike on Bosque Peak.


The Ghost Ranch Trip is scheduled for November 1, 2, and 3. A block of eight rooms has been reserved in the Corral Block. Cost for the rooms and meals will be from $72-79.00.


New business:


Deceased member Vivian Counts was remembered with a moment of silence and a donation to the New Mexico Christian Children’s Home in Portales.


A slate of officers was prepared for the election at the November meeting. President—Waynette Burnett, Vice President—Gloria Pohl, Secretary—Bonnie Long, Treasurer—Billye Head, Director at Large—to be decided at the next meeting. Nancy Woodworth will remain as Program Chairman, Marion Shaw as Librarian, and Judith Tamm as Historian.


Field trips:


Possible dates for Rebecca Stoneman’s trip to her PIT site were October 26 and November 2. November 2 is out because of the Ghost Ranch trip. After discussion, it was decided to plan a rock art tour in the East Mountains in conjunction with Luther’s breakfast burritos being available at Tijeras Pueblo on October 26. A sign-up sheet was completed and Bill Simms will contact the membership about a time and meeting place.


Suggested future field trips were San Marcos, Maxwell Museum, the Santa Fe repository, and the exhibit of Maria Martinez’ pottery at the Indian Museum of Arts and Culture. Morrow Hall reminded the group that all New Mexico museums are free to New Mexico residents or senior citizens on Sundays.


The November speaker will be either Lynn Sebastian or Glenna Dean.

The meeting was called to order by President Bill Simms.


The minutes of the October meeting were read and approved.


Treasurer’s report: after expenditures, present balance is $1,176.74.


There was no library action to report.


Old business:


The October 26 rock art field trip was cancelled.


Bill Simms reported on the trip to Ghost Ranch on November 1, 2, and 3 and passed around pictures he had taken. The trip included a visit to the Dunhams’ Rainbow Mountain Ranch, located in the heart of the Gallinas culture. There may be an opportunity for TCAS to do more work in the area.


New business:


Since we had a large number of members present, a vote was taken to elect officers at the November meeting rather than waiting until the December meeting. Roy McConkey was asked to be the Director at Large, and accepted. Morrow Hall moved that the slate of officers be elected by acclamation. Linda Benz seconded, motion passed. Upon a voice vote, the following were unanimously elected: President—Waynette Burnett, Vice President—Gloria Pohl, Treasurer—Billye Head, Secretary—Bonnie Long, Director at Large—Roy McConkey. Appointed postions will remain as: Librarian—Marion Shaw, Historian—Judith Tamm, Program Chairman—Nancy Woodworth.


Field trips:


Rebecca Stoneman wants to take TCAS to Cement Springs to finish the work started by the PIT project volunteers before they were rained out in September. TCAS will work with her to find a date.


It was suggested by Bill Simms that we concentrate on indoor field trips for the next few months, to avoid cancellations due to bad weather. Suggestions included another visit to Trinity College.


Web site:


Don Giles talked about what a web site for TCAS could include. The group was very interested, and extensive discussion followed. Don, webmaster, will construct the web site using information supplied by members, and we think Estancia High School will host the site on its server.


Newsletter:


Bill Simms will continue to construct the newsletter, but does not want to write it himself. The members need to contribute summaries of field trips, speakers, reviews of new books, profiles of members, and any other relevant information.


The December meeting will be the annual Christmas potluck dinner, with no speaker or business meeting.


The January speaker will be Glenna Dean.

The meeting was called to order by President Bill Simms.


Since this was the annual Christmas potluck, and not intended to be business meeting, the following announcements were made:


Bill Simms and Don Giles announced that the website is coming along, but they are not sure about a server at this time. The site should be available soon.


Waynette Burnett cannot serve as president of TCAS for the upcoming year, so Bill Simms has consented to retain the position for one more year.


The minutes of the October meeting were read by Bonnie Long and approved.


Treasurer’s report: after expenditures, present balance is $


Marion Shaw reported that Linda Benz has donated to the Library copies of Frazier’s People of Chaco Canyon and Dr. Frank Hibben’s book about kiva art at Pottery Mound. Linda McConkey brought a box of books donated by Alma Patrick.


Old business: none was discussed.


New business:


Nancy Woodworth, member of the Board of Trustees for the state association, asked TCAS to submit names for an achievement award before January 15.


A sign-up sheet for providing refreshments during the 2003 meetings was circulated.


Field trips:


No field trips are planned for December.


The January speaker will be Glenna Dean; in February Dodie Fugate will discuss dogs in ancestral pueblos.
