2001 Minutes

January 8, 2001

Torrance County Archaeological Society

Estancia High School Library

The meeting was called to order by President Bill Simms.

The minutes of the November meeting were read and approved. The Treasurer’s report was given by Marcia Fitzner. After collection of 2001 dues and sale of the last three tenth anniversary tiles, Marcia deposited $215.00, bringing the current balance to $610.00. Marion Shaw had no activity to report for the Library.

Old business:

The main topic of discussion was the state meeting. Some of the committees needed to have meetings after the business meeting because Jerry Brody needed information for the AWANYU newsletter, which he wanted to get out the next day. He particular needed the dates and sites of the field trips. Trips offered will include the Salinas Land Grant, Tenabo, Pueblo Colorado and Pueblo Blanco, the Salinas National Monuments, Cerrillos Hills Archaeological Park and Duran.

The call for papers deadline date was set at March 30.

Waynette reported that the speaker for the Bandelier banquet would be Dr. Katherine Spielmann from Arizona State University.

New business:

There will be no speaker for the February meeting, so members can concentrate on the state meeting plans. The tentative plan for the March 5 meeting is a field trip and meeting at Trinity College.

The state association will be meeting at the Albuquerque Museum at 7:30 p.m. on February 20. Bill Simms will attend, and any other interested members are welcome.

After a brief discussion, it was decided that we need a second coffee pot to meet the demands of our meeting attendance. Marcia will purchase one.

Meeting adjourned by President Bill Simms.

Committees met to continue plans for the state meeting.

Sharon Hanna

Secretary

The speaker for the evening was Bill Baxter, representing the Archaeological Conservancy, who talked about the Cerrillos Hills Archaeological Park.

According to Abandoned Mines Specialist Homer Milford, the ores mined in the Cerrillos Hills were galena (40%), silver (15%), turquoise, and other minerals. Galena and turquoise are found together. After 1300 chemical paint came into use for pottery; lead-based paint came from the Cerrillos Hills.

The patio process used for silver requires a slurry consisting of 25% sodium chloride, the silver ore, and small amounts of copper and mercury. The salt used was obtained from the Estancia Valley.

The archaeological park is open for tours on second Saturdays, May through October. For more information, see the web site at www.cerrilloshills.org.

Attendance:

Linda Benz, Waynette Burnett, Don Fitzner, Marcia Fitzner, Pete Golden, Sharon Hanna, Sue Harvey, John Hayden, Billye Head, Earl Head, George Martin, Linda McConkey, Roy McConkey, Linda Powell, Catherine Purley, Luther Rivera, Jerry Shaw, Marion Shaw, Bill Simms, Judith Tamm, Nancy Woodworth.

Minutes of TCAS Meeting

February 5, 2001

President Bill Simms called the meeting to order. With mud conditions severe in the county both Secretary Sharon Hanna and Treasurer Marcia Fitzner were not in attendance. Member Ann Smythe-Coons was asked to take minutes. Minutes of the January meeting were read and approved.

Bill read the treasurer’s report:

$610.71 general account; $120.00 Convention (3 registrations)

Librarian report by Marian Shaw and Bill Simms was given. A Study of the Paleo-Indian And Desert Culture Complexes of the Estancia Valley Area, June 1969 by Tom Lyons,PHD. is a new addition to the TCAS’s collection of books. The need for a locked file cabinet was discussed.

OLD BUSINESS

The Trinity College field trip was discussed. The College is located at Constitution and Eubank. An unique museum of Biblical archeological artifacts from the Holy Land is at the College. Monday, March 12 was the date set for the trip and monthly meeting. The group will meet at Applebee’s on Lomas by Target at 4:30 and then begin the tour at 5:30 and have the meeting at 7:00.

John Hayden shared information about the price for carbon-dating of the sample acquired from the White Ranch excursion. It would be $300 for each sample. After a White Ranch site project by our group was discussed ,the possibility to get a grant was considered. John said he would be willing to write the proposal. The group was in consensus on pursuing this endeavor.

Plans for the up-coming State Convention to be held in Moriarty this April 27-29 were discussed. The State Archeological Society will advance funds to the various committees to prepare for the convention. Registration for the convention will be included in the TCAS Newsletter that will be coming out at the end of the month. Bill asked for help with the Newsletter.

Committees will meet independently. Forms for expected expenses were given to each

committee. Communications between committees will be very important so that duplications will not happen. Bill asked for committee chairs to e-mail decisions to him. The Sunday field trip possibilities were discussed and included Salt Lakes, Tenabo, Pueblo Blanco, Commanche Gap, Tijeras Pueblo, Derramadero. The convention’s banquet speaker Kate Speilman will be willing to lead a trip to Pueblo Blanco and Pueblo Colorado. Everyone agreed the convention participants would be interested in those remote sites that we could make available for this occasion.

NEW BUSINESS

John Hayden presented a letter from the Historical Preservation Society informing TCAS of Historical Preservation Week May 12-May 20. The Society wants to know by March 2 if we wanted to sponsor an event. May 19 there will be an Archeological Fair outside Villa Linda Mall in Santa Fe. There was a discussion of TSAC’s participation with a booth. May 12 there will be a Native American Event with various Native American participants at Tijeras Pueblo.
